Conclusion

If you've made it this far, I have to assume you’re either my wife or you've seen at least some merit in what I've been saying. You're certainly not a fundamentalist, but you're probably not jumping on the atheist bandwagon either. At least not yet. If I had to guess, I'd say you're probably skeptical of the claims of your religion (what intelligent person wouldn't be?), but are not yet ready to toss that part of your identity aside. Fair enough. I hope I've at least given you something to think about, especially with regard to how your uncritical and silent acceptance of the outlandish claims at the core of the faith you were raised in gives cover to the fanatics and their far more literal (and destructive) agenda. I hope, too, that you were able to take something positive away from the Hubble Deep Field and Forty-Mile-Long Bookshelf stories, because we live in an absolutely magnificent universe that's bursting with beauty and wonder. It would be a shame to limit your understanding of it to the one lorded over by the small, petty, and jealous god of the Old Testament.

If you’re open to suggestions, I’ve listed a few ideas below that will help you to take a more proactive role in demanding something better from your religion and begin to marginalize the radical agenda of the fanatics. The list is by no means complete. It's just some ideas to get you going.

Stop going to services at your place of worship. If your pastor or rabbi asks why, tell him it’s because the teachings of the book he holds so dear — the words that are actually printed there, not the watered down spin of “sophisticated” scholars — are so deeply at odds with what you know is moral and just and true that you cannot in good conscience continue to pretend that it offers anything of value to you or to the modern, progressive society you fight for.

Stop paying dues to your church or synagogue, for the same reason.

Take the dues money you would have otherwise thrown away and donate it to a secular charity like the American Red Cross.

If you belong to the Catholic Church, leave it. Now. How can you give money to, and identify with, an institutional that is so blatantly oppressive toward women and so cavalier and dishonest about the epidemic of pedophilia within its ranks? They treat women and children worse than animals. Why do you stay? Why do you pay to perpetuate that treatment? Why do you teach this crap to your children?

Don't send your children to the religious school at your church or synagogue. Instead, use the free time on Sunday to volunteer at a secular institution that helps those less fortunate than you.

Don't send your children to parochial schools. Public schools aren't perfect, but at least they won't indoctrinate your children into the very principles you claim to abhor.

Don't vote for candidates who are overtly religious. I know, this rules out just about everyone these days, including all Republicans, but do the best you can.
